Development of the former Prussian open-air railway station in Leipzig

With a size of approx. 35 ha and its central location in the heart of Leipzig, the site of the former Prussian Freiladebahnhof on Delitzscher Straße is highly relevant in terms of urban development policy and at the same time the largest inner-city construction project of its kind in Germany.

The area is currently predominantly commercial; the inner part lies largely fallow. The aim of the revitalisation is to create a forward-looking, lively and urban-mixed city quarter with an independent urban identity.

From a species protection perspective, the challenges lie in particular in dealing with a large number of building- and woodland-dwelling species (breeding birds and bats) as well as species that colonise open fallow land, such as the sand lizard.

In addition to the species protection report, special concepts for measures for the affected species groups must be developed within the framework of the special permit. Further services are the coordination of the relocation of sand lizards, the ecological monitoring of the construction work (demolition and land clearing), the development of compensation concepts for the affected species groups such as nest box concepts or the development of a 2 ha compensation area for the red-backed shrike and the relocation of sand lizards.
